So you’ve been ice fishing before but you’re not one of these fishing addicts who spends every day of the winter on the ice targeting different species. More like every year you gear up and head out on the ice, but odds are you are all too familiar with the same type of fish you end up reeling in. This winter the hype is all around the humpback… whitefish….and it’s certainly is worth a try. So next time you are planning an outing on the ice, whitefish can be a good option as your target fish.
Whitefish likes cold waters, but unlike lake trout they are certainly more tolerant of warmer water temperatures. Unlike other species they are versatile, and can be found in the variety of depths. Most anglers would say 30-50 ft is you target range, yet there are no limitations where you will catch one. It can be at a 100ft mark or as shallow as 20ft.
While whereabouts of whitefish is one thing, lures is another. Check out a recent video from Steve Rowbotham, giving a detailed overview of this favorite lures for fishing whities on Lake Simcoe.
Here is a thing about fishing tips, if they have been tested…..you can rest assured it works. So gear up and next time you head out back on the ice…think whitefish!
